Photography Laptop Case (aka Pimp Your Laptop Case)
Photography Laptop Case (aka Pimp Your Laptop Case)As a pro photographer specializing in ‘location-based’ advertising images (which is photo-speak for in-the-field instead of in-studio), I often face the challenge of shooting under conditions that do not allow for the comforts of Mac Pros and Cinema Displays to review images, download cards, or shoot direct to the hard drive. (We often have to helicopter into locations, are out in the remote without option at generator, or find ourselves in places where speed and efficiency are key.) As a solution to this problem–and in the theme of ‘do-it-yourself’–my team and I recently developed a cool custom laptop case for addressing these needs using simple, durable, and readily-available materials. Today, we end up using this setup a fair bit and I thought that many in our community might benefit from a quick instructional video highlighting how to put their own one case together for cheap. Hopefully, pro shooters find this a nice compromise for those times when you can’t get your big-boy computers on location, and amateurs find this a great solution for taking their laptop along for the ride.
nice! if it works, please go to my blog and post results under the laptop video via ‘popular posts’. would love to see/share with the community! thanks!
cool – i think im going to mount 2 mini fans in mine,
i am going to use those aluminum cases at the truck stop for about $29 ill put a retractable plug for the power supply recessed in the case thanks for the idea
how heavy is this whole set up?
omg i just received this case! this is amazing
a great example of a great web 2.0 social networking web site is GAGLA dot com….i just discovered it and i think i’ll be using it for all my social networking needs from now…
Fully loaded with computer, drives, all cables, backup batteries, case, power supply, strap, etc = 16.5 lbs. Just weighed it.
gay gay gay
It sometimes gets checked in baggage and sometimes gets carried on — both without problem (at least 30-50 trips).
Is that your set-up for airline travel? If so is it part of your carry-on? TSA must love that one!
but I will admit that this video is awesome
Hey thats a realy cool case!!!Check out my video of my Photography of Jekyll Island,GA.
Couple of hundred bucks? How about a couple of thousand? Three thousand to be exact….and to say nothing of the H2 Hasselblad he’s shooting (another 30,000). Get real folks!!
Thanks for the great video. This inspired me to shell out the cash and buy the case. I also made a video showing how i made my tweaks to the laptop tray. Again thanks for the videos and can’t wait to watch more.
Er…ah…sorry friend, but the title of the video is Laptop CASE, not laptop and hard drives. It’s fair to think that photographers have computers and storage devices. This laptop CASE setup does cost a couple hundred bucks. Not a couple thousand.
Not selling anything – just sharing an idea.
Oh Yeah? Why give the prices for all the components? Just selling a case….baloney!
I’ve never seen someone use the phrase baloney online.
Thanks for making my day, rofl.
mg149ex-So what are you doing to contribute? If you have nothing constructive to say then how about you don’t say it. If you watch the video I think it is self explanatory what Chase is trying to do. Share the knowledge don’t dis it!!!! Great stuff Chase keep it up!
Wow that’s really cool. What about the heat from the laptop? Does it vent well enough?
Does that hand warmer thing really work?
I was referred to CJarvis this morning.
Incredible collection of info!
THANKS for sharing!
Nice thing!!
Great way to transport a laptop and not worry about breaking it. Two thumbs up, Chase! Thanks for the tip.
Nikongigio: Thanks for the words of caution. Note that we’re very attuned to the heat and have been running this rig for about a year without worry. It’s only really snugged up when on the move. Lots of detailed comments about this and other thoughts at chasejarvis dot com slash blog.
Dude, it all looks very cool but you forgot one simple thing: it won’t be cool for long. You have that apple nesteled down in that case so perfectly that it can’t breath and cool itself. All the fan vents both intake and exhaust are blocked. The notebook will overheat sitting in there and either crash or dramaticaly shorten it’s life. Not cool for a $3000 computer!!!!
